Middle School News from the Guidance Counselor

The Louis Armstrong Middle School Open House will be held on Saturday, October 20th at 9:00AM and on Monday, November 5th at 5:00PM.

The Louis Armstrong Middle School is a borough-wide public intermediate school that brings together a culturally diverse group of students from the borough of Queens to educate them academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. It is a barrier-free school allowing physical and curricular access for all students.

LAMS celebrates strong student achievement and high expectation for all members of our school community. They provide a nurturing and supportive environment with an emphasis on STEM and the arts.

Student selection is based upon a lottery. They provide bus services to all parts of Queens.

Scholars Academy will be hosting 3 information sessions and tours for prospective middle school students on Wednesday November 7, Thursday November 8 and Friday November 9 at 9:00 AM.

Parents and students MUST register in order to attend. This event is well attended and fills up quickly. Parents can register on its website

Students DO NOT have to attend in order to apply.

Parents can start getting ready now to apply to middle school this fall! Here’s how:

  • Read the NYC Middle School Directory to learn about admissions. Visit schools.nyc.gov/Middle, click “Find Middle Schools,” and scroll down for your district's directory.
  • Attend the middle school fair in your district to meet schools, ask questions, and learn how to apply to middle school.

Apply to Middle School by Dec 3

The middle school application period opens in October and closes December 3. All students should apply to middle school by the deadline.

Your Program Choices

Your child’s middle school application will contain all of the programs where your child is eligible to apply. Select up to 12 of these programs by ranking them in your true order of preference. Rank your first choice first, your second choice second, and so on.

  • Consider ranking the programs where your child has an admissions priority or guarantee, such as their zoned school(s) or continuing school. You do not have to rank these programs as your first choice to keep your priority.
  • Make an appointment to talk to your child's school counselor. Discuss your child's middle school application choices and how you plan to rank them.

 How to Apply

Apply to middle school online when the application period opens. You will be able to apply in English, Spanish, Chinese, Bengali, Russian, Arabic, Urdu, Haitian Creole, Korean, or French.

Information about the middle school application process for 2018-2019 will be posted here as it becomes available. Guidance Counselor Mrs. Fan is the PS 62 school personnel responsible for the middle school process. You can leave her notes with any questions in her mailbox. She is also working to collect and disseminates middle school information.
