Middle School Information

Middle School News from the Guidance Counselor

I am reaching out to share some initial information about this year’s admissions process. Timeline: o To ensure families have enough time to learn about school options, this year’s application deadline will be later than the traditional early December deadline. o This information is now available on DOE website, and will be shared with families who have signed up for email alerts. o A more detailed timeline will be shared in the near future. · Later this fall, Welcome Letters will be available before the application opens. o Each Welcome Letter has instructions on creating a MySchools account, and the account creation code that lets parents link their child to their account. o Welcome Letters will be mailed directly to all families; elementary school staff may also provide them to families. o Families can continue exploring options through the MySchools Directory. · After Welcome Letters are distributed to families, the application will then open. o At that time, families will then be able to access their personalized application, rank up to 12 program choices, and submit their application up until the application deadline. o As in past years, families may also elect to submit their application through their elementary school. Directories: This year, due to budget priorities, the middle school directory and admissions guide will exist exclusively in a virtual format, and will not be printed. · I know this was a tool that families used to explore school options; however, the MySchools Directory contains all the information about middle schools that was previously in printed admissions guides. · As the application opens, families may learn about the admissions process on DOE website where they can both read an admissions guide and watch videos explaining the admissions process. · Additional resources will be developed and distributed digitally, as well as through elementary schools. Open Houses and Fairs: Open houses and fairs have served as a key way for families to learn about school options and the admissions process, and DOE is committed to continuing this tradition even while many families are remote. DOE is developing resources for middle schools to hold virtual open houses so that families can learn about school options. This would allow DOE to temporarily pause in-person middle school open houses and fairs, until it is safe to resume in-person large open houses and fairs. As always, the DOE Middle School Admissions team will continue to work closely with middle schools on recruitment and promotional strategies, and share updates as those develop. Additionally, the team will be producing a series of online videos for families that explain the admissions process, provide a MySchools tutorial, and answer FAQs. These videos will be uploaded to the DOE website, and will be shared directly with families as they are created. Families Temporarily Living Outside NYC: Students who have temporarily relocated outside NYC, but who have maintained a permanent residence in NYC, may participate in admissions. In the meantime, families can… · Sign up for the DOE middle school admissions email list · Explore school options online in the MySchools middle school directory
