English Language Learners (ELL) Information

Many students at this school are learning English as a second, or even third, language.  Therefore at the beginning of each school year, in September,  a meeting is held to explain to parents about the services available to help their children learn English and succeed at school.

For parents of children who are new to the school a Parent Orientation Meeting is held:

  • A video is shown and a brochure given out which explains the three types of programs available in NYC public schools, ( English as a Second Language, Dual Language and Transitional Bilingual Education.)
  • Parents then choose the program they want for their children and complete the forms. (Program Selection Form and Parent Survey)
  • Assistance for parents is available from interpreters in Spanish, Punjabi and Arabic, as well as translated information in home languages.
  • A follow up meeting is also held in October.

For parents of children who are continuing in the school a separate meeting Continued Entitlement for ELLs is held:
  • Results of the NYSESLAT test are given to parents.  This is a state test specially designed to assess the learning of students for whom English is a second language.
  • Information is shared with parents explaining how they can support their children to do better on this test in the following year.
  • The English as a Second Language teachers share information individually with parents about their child's abilities in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening in English and give an overview of the program for the year.
  • Time for questions is provided.
  • Assistance for parents is available in home languages so that they can ask questions, talk with the teachers,  and complete the forms needed to make sure that their children continue to receive support for their learning.
We are pleased to be able to offer these special meetings to support parents in making the right choice for their children and helping them with their learning.  We hope that you will make every effort to attend the right meeting for you and we look forward to welcoming you to our school.
